diy candles {so fun}

November 15th | decorating, DIY

this weekend i bought some inexpensive glass candles {plain white} at the grocery store and decided to get creative!

this project is pretty darn easy and very low cost. and the candles placed together makes a great impact!

first i found a font i liked and enlarged it and printed out the word peace. i carefully cut around each letter to create a relief stencil.

then i tore some yellowed pages from an old book and decoupaged them onto the front of the candle.

for decoupage i used two parts white glue to one part water.

once the decoupaged paper was dry, i placed the cut out letter over the candle and carefully sponged black paint over the letter. then i extended the black paint to create a box shape. once i covered the area with black paint i removed the cut out letter.

with a few snowflakes and a vintage frame, it makes for a simple, pretty winter display.

i can’t believe next week is thanksgiving and then christmas is right around the corner. i’m so excited i can hardly stand it! we’ll put up our christmas tree right after thanksgiving. when do you put your tree up?

Those are so cool Lisa! We also put our tree up right after Thanksgiving. I really want a new artificial tree this year. Does any one have one in good shape in the SLO area?

Sorry, I hit submit too early! I saw some of these candles the other day and was thinking about doing something with them again. In the past I’ve printed out large images of angels on parchment paper and glued them on.

    LOVE your Peace idea! :)

Hi Lisa honey, I love these. Can’t get glass candles like that here in NZ but I know I can get little glass tealight holders so I could do a smaller version.

The year before last we finally gave in and bought an imitation Christmas tree. I love live trees so much and was sort of sad I wouldn’t be having them any more. THEN I realised I can put my tree up as early as I like with no fear of it dying before Christmas Day! Yay.. I think I will put it up by the 10th of December. Question is – how to stop said 1 year old dog from eating it!!! Crikey! LOLOL

we have an artificial tree too–i just burn a yummy candle to bring in the christmas smell. also, if you can find tall pillar candles, you could decoupage right onto the wax. hugs hugs!

p.s. our imtation Christmas tree really does look like a real one! Even better! xx

  15. Anne says:

We used start slowly decorating the house and then wait to put our tree up until a week or two into December…but this year I’m having a get together at my house on the 5th…so I might be putting it up the last weekend in November.
Your candles are pretty all lit up.

I know what my weekend project is going to be…I think I’ll start with the word: thankful, for Thanksgiving. These candle sets would make great gifts!

  17. Sarah says:

Those candles are so creative! Very pretty!
We will put our Charlie Brown tree (a replica, we love it!) up around December 1st I think. It’s our first year with a baby, so December is especially exciting this year!

Absolutely beautiful! Especially when the candles are lit. And I love that you hung the simple, cut out snowflakes around the frame. It just looks so pretty ~

  21. I do think that I still have time to use the idea you have shown . It will make a change to the Christmas look at home

  22. Taylor says:

I tried this project out. I’m having a hard time keeping the letters in place while I paint over them with black paint. They tend to move around and smudge the paint into the letter. How did you keep your letters so clean around the edges?

Very cool! I’ve got to try this! Thanks for posting
