Add a bit of Gold: Upcycling Crystal

I love a good makeover! Painting the base of this pedestal takes it up a notch and it’s still safe! Isn’t it pretty?

I found some beautiful crystal pieces at a thrift store for a few dollars each. I wanted to give them a little something more, so I decided to paint just a portion of each with some metallic gold paint. For the pedestal, I painted the stand but left the plate to be the natural crystal. With the jar, I just painted the lid to make it look gold. I even got a little metal cup which looked pretty dull on its own. Giving it a new coat of gold paint breathed new life into it!

This Martha Stewart liquid gilding paint is the best!! It can be used on fabric, wood, glass, metal, ceramic, really any surface that’s paintable. There are lots of different colors you can choose from, but personally I’m a fan of using the metallic gold or silver to give a bit of shiny flair to whatever I’m upcycling. There are many different brands of gold paint out there, so use whatever works for you and your project, but this one is my personal favorite.

The paint goes on thick with a nice sheen. I did two coats to make sure it lasts longer, but can always touch it up if I need to.

A little paint makes all the difference! Upcycling is the perfect way to make thrift finds all your own. Get fun and creative with it, and use your own personal style to create something uniquely yours.
