hiking madonna mountain

September 3rd | family, san luis obispo

Last weekend we tried a new hike–Madonna Mountain. It ends at a huge ‘M’ on the side of the mountain. The way up is a bit steep but definitely manageable. The landscape was dry {we’re in a severe drought} but breath-taking.

When Matthias was little we told him the ‘M’ on the side of the mountain stood for Matthias. So it was fun to hike there and see it up close. He struck an epic pose near the ‘M’–check it out below.

David loves to be in the pack and soaking up the fresh air.

The dry grass against the blue sky was beautiful.

How did I get so lucky to call these boys ‘mine’?

This hike had lots of cacti–different from other hikes we’ve done.

All smiles–I love it!

After the hike we got cinnamon rolls. So it was pretty much perfect!

We’re on the search for more good hikes. I want to try a hike in Avila Beach that ends at a lighthouse. It sounds amazing!

sister birthday 2015

August 19th | celebrate the every day, san luis obispo, shops i love

Last weekend I got away with my twin sis, and my two younger sisters who are also twin for a sister weekend. All of our birthdays are in August and we’ve had this tradition since college.
How insane is that?!

We rented a luxury cabin {kind of like a tiny house} from Flying Flags resort in Buellton. It was adorable! We ate so much good food and talked and talked and laughed and cried and talk some more. I brought matching pajama bottoms for all of us because we’re nerdy like that! It was some much needed time away to rest and have fun. And of course I have lots of pics to share with you! At the end of the post I have links for our favorite spots in Buellton, Santa Ynez and Los Olivos.

hello point buchon trail {hello cousins!}

August 10th | family, hello monday, san luis obispo

We had four nieces in town this weekend, along with three aunties and a grandma. It was a full house and so much fun! We ate yummy food, hit some garage sales, watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off {classic!} and hiked Point Buchon in Montana de Oro.

It’s a brand new week! How about some hellos?

hello whale watching in avila beach

July 13th | family, hello monday, san luis obispo

We’ve had humpback whales off Avila Beach for weeks. We took a couple evening to walk along the ocean and look for them–and we say lots of backs and tales and spouts, but no jumping. So many of our friends had seen them jumping up out of the water to feed. We went back for lunch at Avila Beach and spent some time watching for them in the early afternoon and we finally saw a few pop their heads out of the water. It was amazing! So fun to whale watch from the shore.

It’s Monday and we’re greeting a new week. We’ve been busy with summer fun and work craziness. I’m not sure we’re ready to jump into another week but ready or not, here we go!

Hello pelicans above us and diving into the ocean to feed. So cool!

Hello to feeling afraid. Matthias was worried about the stability of the pier. There were so many people out there whale watching. A couple days later, they closed the pier to make sure it was structurally sound. So maybe his fears were well founded!

folly home, carpinteria, CA

July 9th | san luis obispo, shops i love

A couple weeks ago, Chrissie and I stumbled on the SWEETEST little shop in Carpinteria {just south of Santa Barbara} called Folly. It’s full of vintage finds, paintings, pottery, textiles and light. So much inspiration. Take a look…

hello cousins in carpinteria

June 29th | adventures, hello monday, san luis obispo

Hello Monday! We are in the thick of summer fun and business craziness. The two seem to go hand in hand–and we’re doing our best to roll with it. Last week the boys and I met up with my twin sis and her twin daughters to kick off summer with some swimming, good food and hotel silliness. We had so much fun! How about some hellos?

Hello sunscreen! Sometimes putting on sunscreen feels like a part time job!

Hello swimming and sunshine. David loved the pool–it was nice and warm. And of course the other kids swam for hours.

Hello email and meetings between trips to the beach and the ice cream shop. Sometimes it flows and sometimes I feel pulled and frustrated.

Hello camping. Which means hello dirt and sand and roasting marshmallows.

Hello time with friends. That’s the best part of summer, I think!

Hello s’mores and cinnamon rolls and eating waaay too much sugar.

Hello to YOU! It’s a brand new week with beauty waiting to be found. What are you saying hello to this week?

hiking the bluffs montana de oro

May 27th | adventures, family, san luis obispo

We’ve been hiking a lot lately and it’s been so fun! One of the easier hikes we’ve done is off the beaten path and absolutely breath-taking. It’s land owned by PG&E so you have to enter by walking past a gate and sign into the ranger station. The views are staggering and the landscape is easy to navigate. Check out these pics.

Maybe we should have a gathering in San Luis Obispo and I’ll take you to my favorite restaurants, show you some beautiful hikes and of course we could do a little thrifting too. Wouldn’t that be fun?

hiking bishop’s peak, san luis obispo

May 8th | adventures, san luis obispo

Last weekend we hiked Bishop’s Peak off Foothill in San Luis Obispo. It was harder than I thought! It’s do-able, we just took our time. Steve carried David in the backpack. At the end, we all had a huge feeling of accomplishment!

Going down was a little scarier than coming up. So good for us to stretch ourselves and try new things.

It’s Friday and we are heading home to the boys. I absolutely cannot wait to see them. What are you weekend plans?

left field, san luis obispo

February 3rd | decorating, san luis obispo, shops i love

This brand new shop here in San Luis Obispo, Left Field, combines some of my favorite things–succulents, baskets, colorful rugs, rough stones, rusty metal, textured shells and lots of light. The result is magical. Today I’ve got lots of photos to share. I hope they inspire you!

Left Field is on Monterey, right across the street from Ruby Rose and just down from Splash Cafe.

Want to read an interview with the owner? Click here.

Browsing a couple amazing shops and clam chowder, hmmm. Sounds like the makings of a perfect afternoon, don’t you think?!

Montana de Oro

November 20th | adventures, san luis obispo

Last week, Steve was in the DR and friends came to stay and keep me company. We went to Montana de Oro and played in the sand and caves a bit. It’s so beautiful there. So peaceful–and good for my soul. And oh my goodness, pics of my boys from years ago at Montana de Oro. So much love.

As you can see I spent most of my time hunting for heart shaped rocks–and it paid off big time!

Where are you finding beauty today?
