Sing along with the nativity drummer boy
When I was growing up, I always loved the song ‘The Little Drummer Boy’. Mostly for the catchy drums in the background, and the “pa rum pum pum pum”s… but as I got older and really listened to the lyrics of the song, I grew to love it more and more!

“Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born king to see
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the king
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum
So to honor him
Pa rum pum pum pum
When we come”

We’ve all heard the song so many times. It’s played on the Christmas radio station, while out Christmas shopping, or even on your own holiday playlist. So many talented artists have done their own renditions, giving their own unique flair to the beloved classic. You may even sing it with your family while Christmas caroling! We know all the words, but how often do we think of the meaning behind them?

‘The Little Drummer Boy’ is an imagined story of a little boy meeting baby Jesus. The boy is told to go see Jesus, a newly born king. Many are bringing the baby’s gifts to honor him. This may be a reference to the three wisemen and their story found in the Bible. The three wisemen come from far away to bring baby Jesus generous and thoughtful gifts fit for a king: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The wisemen are able to give these wealthy gifts to Jesus, and so they do with great joy and humility. They sacrifice their time, traveling far to give this new king what they can to praise him.

“Little baby
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too
Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our king
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum”

But the little drummer can’t give expensive gifts like the wisemen. In the song, he says he is a ‘poor boy too’. Just like the little drummer boy, Jesus had humble beginnings. He was born in a manger because there was no room for him in a nearby inn. The little drummer boy has a similar situation to this new king, yet he wishes to honor him in the best way he can.

So the little drummer boy gives what he has— his song! He brings his drum, and plays for baby Jesus. He may not have the means to give Jesus an expensive gift, but he still has something wonderful to offer. His talent, his joyful playing, his praise!

“Shall I play for you
Pa rum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum
Mary nodded Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum”

So the little drummer boy plays, and little Jesus smiles at him. The boy’s gift was loved and cherished by the newborn king, just as much as the wisemen’s offerings!

This is the most beautiful part of the story!! I just love what the song teaches us. We all have something to give, no matter our situation. We all can use our time, talents, money, or whatever we have as a generous gift to Jesus and to others. When we give with our whole hearts, Jesus smiles on us. He is grateful for the big and the small gifts!

“I played my drum for him
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for him
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum”

We can learn from both the little drummer boy and baby Jesus. Every gift is precious, no matter how small. If we are generous with what we have, then we are honoring him! And just like baby Jesus, we too can delight in the generosity of others, in whatever way they are able to give.

“Then he smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum”

The history of the little drummer boy nativity story
Unlike the story of the three wisemen and the shepherds, the little drummer boy is not found printed in the Bible. Instead, it is an imagined story of a little boy giving his talents as a gift to the new born baby Jesus. Even though it is made up, we can learn so much from the lessons behind the story of the Little Drummer Boy. To give what we can, and receive with joy and thankfulness! No matter how big or how small, giving something special will make Jesus smile.

The story of the Little Drummer Boy is said to come from an old Czech carol. This carol sounded very different from the song we know and love today, with different lyrics and music. But the story is the same. When it was first written in its English version, the song was called ‘The Carol of the Drums’ because of the repeating lines of “pa rum pum pum pum”. This lyric is meant to sound like a drum being played, fitting the story very well! This became the most well known lyric of the whole song. But those parts were said to be added later as a way to keep time. The catchy words stuck {thankfully!!} and stayed around to form the version that we sing along to today.

The song’s popularity is undoubtable. Since its creation, so many artists have come out with their own renditions. Some add their own flair, while others stick to the traditional sound. I have a hard time picking my favorite version, there are so many that I just love! It’s a good thing you can never get tired of this Christmas classic!!

The song is sung today by so many, as a recording, at concerts, while caroling. Every year, my family loves to have a caroling night, where we belt out the beloved Christmas carols together over a cup of hot chocolate. This is one of the songs that always makes the list. We giggle and dance while singing along to the beat of the little drummer boy’s drum!

Remember the Christmas story with your nativity set
My ‘A Savior is Born Nativity Set’ is a tangible representation of the greatest gift of all time! At Christmas, we give presents to our near and dears as a way to show love and gratitude for one another. We also practice this tradition as a way to honor Jesus’ gift to us. To come to the Earth as a baby so he could save us from our sins. This is not something we earned, but a gift given to us through love and grace!

Jesus was born as a baby by the Virgin Mary, who right before his birth traveled with her husband Joseph to his home town of Bethlehem. When they got there, they had no place to stay since every inn was full. Finally, they found room in a stable. A home for livestock became their only shelter.

While in the stable, Mary gave birth to Jesus and laid him down in a manger, a feeding trough for the livestock. A bright star in the sky shone overhead, revealing to everyone that Jesus was the new born king! Three wisemen, who studied the prophecies around Jesus’ birth, noticed the star in the sky. They knew what it meant, so they traveled to the spot and gave gifts to honor baby Jesus.

But it was not only the wisemen who knew of Jesus’ birth. A group of shepherds who were watching their flocks of sheep were told by angels of the birth of a new born king. Immediately, the shepherds followed the star to see the new baby.

Jesus came to Earth for the wisemen, the shepherds, for Mary and Joseph, you and me, and yes, even a little boy with a drum. This is a story of great love, of sacrifice and grace and faith. This is the greatest story of all time!! Keep it in your heart always, and as we celebrate the season of Christmas, remember the greatest gift of all with a beautiful nativity set.
