  1. Happy birthday…have a blessed year of your new age! My favorite bday cake is ice cream cake! My stepdad used to buy those from BR for all the kids’ bdays…now I sometimes make them homemade for my family. 🙂

  2. my favorite type of Birthday cake is any kind that is shared with all my good friends and family…….Happy Birthday….a couple days late!

  3. My absolute favorite birthday dessert was my grandmother’s pineapple cake. Unfortunately, I lost my grandmother almost 10 years ago so I’m no longer able to enjoy her cake. Many people (myself included) have tried to replicate the cake, but no one has been able to do it. I have such fantastic memories of baking with her, licking the cake batter from the mixing beaters, and enjoying her delicious cake. To this day, everytime I get a whiff of a pineapple dessert, I’m reminded even more of my amazing grandmother.

  4. i’ve been dreaming of owning a little piece of lld loveliness 🙂

my hubs is a die hard yellow cake with chocolate frosting man… whereas something different sounds good to me every time i crave dessert (or have a birthday!). but chocolate usually wins!

I cannot believe I just missed your birthday?
Plenty of sunshine is coming your way
For this wonderful woman on this glorious day 🙂

My favourite birthday treat is my girlfriend’s honey pie. With its sticky sweet centre, it’s kinda messy to eat, but I have to say, that’s actually the best part. It’s too much fun licking it off our fingers which always makes us laugh, and honey pie with extra laughs on top is the best birthday present ever!

We don’t remember days – we remember moments xx

Hoping your birthday was special, Lisa.

  69. When I was a child, I was the oldest of 6 and since my Dad wasn’t around (alcoholic) and my Mom was working, I was the other parent. My youngest sister was 10 years younger than me and her name is Angela. Her favorite birthday cake was Angelfood cake with the white icing. So every year for her birthday, I would make one. Now as an adult, my own grown children love ice cream cakes, but I still love that Angelfood cake with white frosting for my own.

  87. Hi Lisa –

I’ve been reading your blog – quietly – for quite a while, but this birthday post made me nostalgic!

My mom used to make us home-made angel food cake – the mixer whirred and the bowls twirled… I’d press my nose to the tempered glass of our avocado green oven while the cake slowly reached it’s toasty peaks… I remember the cake cooling on the counter, upside down, on a green glass 7-up bottle. While the tender cake cooled, my mother would make a lemon and powdered sugar frosting to drizzle delicately over the toasty brown cake – so sticky good. But the best part…? She’d send my younger brother out to the garden to pick the tiny purple flowers that I loved. Then, together, they would nestle a narrow little juice glass into the center of that angel food cake and set those lovely little blossoms in the middle…

She went through all of this birthday fuss because HER mother did that for her birthday. My great-grandmother used to do the same for my grand-mother’s birthday. And now, I do this for my daughters’ birthdays. I think of each of these great women at every birthday celebration. It’s amazing what something so simple can do for a family of amazing, strong, loving women! Generations of women bound together through the traditions of those who came before us and the love of our own sweet children…

Happy Birthday, Lisa! I hope that YOUR new year is filled with great joy, tremendous happiness, fulfilling adventure, true love and hearty laughter! Oh, and cake. Lots and lots of cake!!

    xo
    peace

My mother is not the crafty type, so this was a special effort that she made for me every year. As an adult, I’ve missed it. 260. Happy birthday!!!! I love the blog! My favorite dessert for my birthday would be carrot or hummingbird cake! Thank you for the opportunity!!!

  261. When it comes to birthdays, I’m torn between a regular chocolate cake (with chocolate icing), and ice cream cake…chocolate and vanilla with chocolate syrup and oreo pieces. Of course, my birthday is in the summertime (4 days before yours!), so that may have something to do with it!

To be honest with you, my favorite type of birthday cake is any that is made by either my husband, children or a friend. It’s the thought that counts.

Thanks for this fabulous opporunity!

  351. When I was a kid, made from scratch chocolate cake was my favorite. Now I’m liking banana nut. Both were receipes from my mom.

Chocolate cake with vanilla frosting…especially if it’s homemade with love!

  354. Where I live in Texas, there is a french bakery that makes a delicious moist white cake with slices of strawberries, mandarian oranges and kiwi mixed in with the cream that separates the two layers of white cake. More fruit on the top of the cake and almond slivers all around the sides are the perfect touches to a fabulous cake.My family gets this cake for almost any occasion, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

  355. Well…what kind of birthday treat do I NOT like?!

When I taught school, I had a fabulous team leader who took such good care of all of us on her team…we lovingly called her “Mom” :)! She would make every person whatever kind of treat they wanted every year on their birthday. My favorite was her banana split cake…super yummy and super easy to make, but very time-consuming. A real labor of love.

  356. A belated Happy Birthday to you! My favorite birthday treat is a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I’m so easy to please!

    Enjoy your birthday weekend!

Oh, my favorite birthday cake. It has never changed in my 34 years:

  362. Happy Birthday!

I always love homemade desserts much more than storebought, especially on birthdays. Last year, my awesome brother-in-law made me a fabulous chocolately cake filled with such yummy, goodness and topped it off with neopolitan ice cream. YUMMY!! It was such a hit and so far one of my favorites.

  363. Happy Birthday!! My favorite birthday cake is whatever my 4 kiddos happen to whip up…..sometimes it isn’t even edible but that doesn’t matter when they put so much effort into it!!

  364. Happiest Bday! My hubby’s was yesterday 🙂 Growing up my dad would make our bday cakes (he never cooked anything else) my choice was always chocolate with white buttercream icing & we got to have it for breakfast!
Now as an adult….I like to get cupcakes 😉 The best cake near me is a place called “Icings, or icing on the cake” in Los Gatos, CA. They have the most heavenly banana cake. yum! Also, a good mudpie can suffice.

  367. Happy happy birthday, Lisa!!! I hope your day is awesome!!!! Fave birthday cake…for me, it’s now a yummy vegan chocolate cake that a friend of mine made me. Now I make it every time I have to bake a birthday cake for anyone including myself! It’s SO moist and good! Enjoy your time in England!

  378. Many Happy Returns of the Day, Lisa! How fun to be on holiday for your birthday 😉

I’m not a huge cake fan, but my mum makes this pineapple cake that is soooooooo amazing I could eat the whole thing single handedly. Maybe even in one sitting! The best part is the icing, which isn’t actually icing or frosting – it’s some orange flavoured mixture that’s smooth and creamy and really, the cake is just a vehicle for it. *Sigh* I could really go for some now. I wonder if I could convince my mum to whip one up in your honour 😉

  379. August 18th is my birthday too:) I share this great day with my dad (and now you and your sister too). It is super special to share a birthday with someone you love so much. I hope you enjoyed the day in England. How magical.

  380. Amazing give-away! I started following your blog after seeing some of your products on Elsie’s blog A Beautiful Mess. I love the personalized items and I am sure I will get that tableware when I get married (in the far future) 🙂

Two years ago my Canadian bf moved to the Netherlands to live with me. During that fall, it was the first time I experienced Thanksgiving and some other North-American ‘traditions’ during the fall. This included pumpkin pie – homemade, by my bf. Since then I can’t wait till it’s the season again. I’d never had pumpkin before and now I am the biggest fan 🙂 Luckily my birthday is in October….

  520. Oh my goodness!! I live just down the road from Wolverton in Milton Keynes – you could have dropped in for lunch!! We know Wolverton well. I have been doing lots of family history research and visiting places such as the cottage where my great grandmother lived and the church where my parents married. It’s so fascinating. It’s been really interesting following where you have visited on your trip here – do you have many more places to see? I hope the sunshine returns for you, today has been just awful. Very English weather 🙂

  521. What a special outing for your family!

I grew up in New England, and our family tree goes back to Myles Standish on the Mayflower, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and a bunch of people who led sweet, quiet lives around Boston and in Maine. My Grammy is from here in Olympia, but she’d come visit often, and we’d drive all over the countryside, visiting little cemeteries and overgrown homes. It’s a very special bond we now share, as I am trying to transfer all her research into my own hands as she ages.

    Keep enjoying your trip!

  522. My grandfather was part of the troops in WW2 to help free Dacau Concentration Camp near Munich, Germany. I went there when I was in college and took pictures of me standing by the watch towers in the exact spot my grandfather stood over 50 years earlier. I also took them a bunch of pictures my family had and the camp museum said she had never seen pictures of that sort. It was an amazing experience and I’m so proud of my grandfather. There is a plaque in the concentration camp with his troop’s name and it brought warm memories to my heart. Too bad he had already passed one year earlier and didn’t get to talk to me about it.

  523. Yes!

My father’s father’s family is from an incredibly small town about an hour outside of Indianapolis, so when we were kids we would go back and visit every once in a while. There is not much there anymore, but we would definitely always go visit the family cemetery where most everyone is buried. The family has lived in that area since the 1700’s, and one of my great grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War. He was even at the Battle of Yorktown when the English surrendered, which is pretty amazing. There is a government-issued plaque in front of his grave for that honor. That is something special that I will never forget. 🙂

  524. My aunt still lives in my great grandparent’s home in Mexico which we visit every few years. I was able to go once to New York City’s Little Italy and see the home where my grandma was born– I love this kind of stuff!

  525. My Oma (grandmother in German), grew up in a town called Zweibrucken, Germany. The town has a railroad station so it was a target during WWII. Half of the house that she grew up in was blown up during the war. When I was 17, my grandparents took me to Europe & our first stop was Zweibrucken…and I got to see that house! Talk about an emotional experience!

  526. Hi Lisa,

I love all of your pics! I will get there someday. Just wanted to forward a blog of a little girl that fought a hard fight and thought you might be touched by her story. I was thinking maybe a little necklace would be great for this brave and loving mom. Just thought you would be interested. It makes me a much better mother when I read things like this…the blog is:

    http://aniandmatttaylor.blogspot.com/

    Sad but beautiful. Enjoy!
    Whitney

  527. My husband grew up in a historic home – the first superintendent of schools for the nation. His family moved when he was about 10 years old but he took me back to show me the little town and his old house. As luck would have it, the new owners saw us lingering in front of the house. After some quick introductions (and assurance we weren’t casing the joint) he invited us in and my husband gave me a tour of his old home. It was so cool!!!
