my mom & dad’s wedding

March 7th | family, weddings

i thought it would be fun to kick off wedding week with a few photos from my parents’ wedding. they’ve been married 45 1/2 years! they are so young in these pictures-just starting out. aren’t they cute?

my mom’s mom {my grandma} made my mom’s dress, veil and tiara. she also made the bridemaids’ dresses, the flowergirl’s dress and her own dress. and then, 34 years later, i wore my mom’s dress when i got married. we altered it just a bit {took off the sleeves and added a little lace} it was so special! you can see a few pictures of me wearing the dress here.they walked down the aisle to the wedding march. they had a white cake with white frosting. i asked my mom if she had a special memory and she said, “It was the perfect day–I felt so special and as beautiful as a princess.  I didn’t realize it then, but my parents, who had very little money, somehow managed to give me a fairy-tale wedding.”

thank you, mom and dad, for sharing a bit of your wedding day with us. i love all the handmade touches in your wedding. and i love that it was beautiful and simple. i am so thankful for each of you!

if you’re married–share a simple memory from your wedding day with us!

Hi Lisa. Great photos! Very similar to my parents wedding. Wedding dress and even the “peeking through the back window” shot! Fun!

    I love it!!

My favorite memory was meeting my groom beforehand at the lake to pray together and snap photos.

I did so well not crying until I looked at my brother (who was the best man) and saw him crying. It was too much. But my sweet (nearly) husband swiped the tears away with the edge of his finger and just smiled at me.

I loved my wedding, even if it was tiny! The best memory I have is of my nephew drooling over the wedding cake when we got to the reception. As soon as my husband and I took pictures cutting the cake I took my piece and went to our table since a friend was going to serve everyone else. When I looked back at Mike to see where he went, I saw him giving his slice to my nephew whose eyes were size of saucers. He dug in with his fingers! Who needs a fork when fingers work just as well!

I have a very similar photo of John and I if that last picture of your parents, Lisa, was taken in a VW :)

    What beautiful memories. :)

I walked down the aisle to Good Day Sunshine by the Beatles (played by a pianist) and it was so fun to see my family singing me down the aisle!

A favorite memory from our wedding (Novembe 2002): Me and my husband were so hungry before the wedding, he decided to run to Sonic and get us a snack. So, there I am, dressed to walk down the aisle – drinking a chocolate peanut butter shake from Sonic. Everyone thought I was crazy, drinking a shake in my Wedding Dress. But I was just having such a great time at my wedding – I ddn’t even care!

You look so much like your Mom! What wonderful photographs you have.

My wedding was outdoors in my parent’s yard in Vermont and involved a downpour of rain and something called, “The Bride Slide”.

What a cute story and I love the fact you wore your mother’s dress on your special day!

We had a fall wedding…and the day was beautiful! I remember I wanted the wedding to get started so badly…I wanted toI was run down the aisle, because I could not wait to marry the man of my dreams. The day was perfect in so many ways.

A simple memory I have is just being so happy. I felt like your mom did, I felt beautiful and thankful, our ceremony was simple and it was wonderful just as it was, all the little things did not matter . . .

  13. Jaleen says:

My dad (a photographer) set up a video camera and kept it rolling for guests of the wedding to leave a special message for my husband and I while they waited for the ceremony to start. A month after the wedding, we sat down and watched the video and cried and laughed a lot! I married my high school sweetheart on August 7th, 2010 and couldn’t be happier.

  14. Kelli says:

I loved how our cake was just a tower of white rectangles with plain white frosting and blackberries and raspberries along the edge of each layer and piled on top. Super simple!

  15. Ruth Yoder says:

    awe, that is so sweet!
my memory is how nothing else existed while we were doing our vows. It was just me and him …It was the best. I almost have a tear now.

  16. Mandi says:

Those are wonderful photos – I love the one of them peeking out of the car window! Congrats to your parents on their 45+ years!

    i have a funny memory…

we were young (21 and 19) and all our best men were still in college, not at all interested in getting married. so when hubs tossed the garter over his shoulder, they all RAN the opposite direction instead of trying to catch it! it was really funny, and we have it on film to look back and laugh at together!

  18. Marilyn says:

I remember my husband and I not getting to eat more than a couple of bites of our meals during the reception. Then, I remember us insisting that we get to sit down and eat our entire slices of cake without interruption. :-)

The one thing that stuck out the most to me on my wedding day/night was that we officially never had to say good-bye at the end of a night. After five years of dating, I hated having to say good-bye at the end our time together. Our wedding day made it official, we never had to go home … we were home.

    • Jen says:

Oh, I love this! I remember that as well – I’d get so mad because I’d stay so late at his house and then have to drive home all tired and crabby. Yes, no more saying goodbye, just goodnight. :)

my husband and i were married may of 2006…it was such a great day. he was in his dress blues and all his ushers were in their class a’s (the green uniforms). we had such a good time…everything was so simple but so special. and the reception was a blast! my daddy recorded himself singing butterfly kisses (it’d always been our song) and we danced to that during our father/daughter dance…the only part of the day where i almost cried. :)

  21. mary says:

what a beautiful moment captured. i love that you wore her dress.

  22. KaraM says:

I have only been married 8 months. A simple moment: my photographer captured the sweetest picture of my mom looking at me in my dress. I have it framed on my desk…I love it!

  23. kelly says:

Married 13 years…4 kids later, and more in love each day. Our wedding day was our first kiss at the altar and boy was it worth the wait. ♥

  24. Sarah-Anne says:

you look so much like your mom, lisa!! that’s the first thing i noticed, haha!

  25. Kristin S says:

ADORE her dress. If I ever get married, I so want a dress inspired by 1960’s dresses. I love the classic modesty yet so pretty.
I remember the day my mom donated hers…

  26. Jennifer says:

The honeymoon destination was a secret until my wedding day, so my favorite memory was on the way to the reception, when my husband told me we were going to Maui. We’ve been married almost 11 years (May 13,2000). Every year just gets better!

  27. Robbin says:

We’ve been married for 32 years. One of my favorite memories is as I was walking down the aisle, one of my favorite senior saints who has been with the Lord for awhile now, tapped me on the arm and said, “Go get him!” I almost died as I continued down the aisle. Well I got him and I’m keeping him! :)

  28. kelly says:

Lisa you resemble each of your parents so much. Congrats to their 45 years!

We were married in a memorial rose garden. It rained all day the day before our wedding. When we arrived at the garden, the roses were in full bloom & little water droplets on the petals. <3

  29. I casually walked along the edge of the pond with my dad. The ceremony was immediate family only and I very clearly remember hearing my mother-in-law to be saying “she’s wearing cowboy boots too!” I had a fairly traditional dress, with black and red boots underneath. I can’t remember why but Hubby and I decided the wedding party (all 4 of us) should all wear boots. My favourite picture is this one here:

  30. Anne says:

Your Mom’s eyes, your Dad’s smile…you look just like them!
My Uncle Dave didn’t want to leave the reception before we did….but he finally gave up. haha He came up to me and said “I wanted to wait and be part of the send-off…but it doesn’t look like you’re leaving anytime soon”. So we pretended to leave…went up the street and came back! We were having too much fun to leave all our friends!

  31. Kat says:

Getting married barefoot on the beach in the summer sunshine with the most vibrant bouqet of flowers, my handsome Husband beside me and just feeling so much joy and happiness!
I really was just so relaxed.
I also love our photos. Our photographer took THE best, most candid shots. LOVE them all, even 12 years later.

  32. Sherry says:

Really cute. But how did Tim fit in the back seat of a VW Bug??

  33. Caroline says:

My husband and I married 11 years ago. I remember how the day was made extra special by so many friends and family making so many finishing touches. I had so many close friends and I did not want to leave anyone out, so I ended up with 7 bridesmaids and 6 page boys (I wasn’t initially going to have page boys, but my nephew was excited about being a “paper boy” and another 6 year old sibling of a bridesmaid excitedly assumed that he was going to be a page boy and I didn’t want to disappoint them!!)

  34. Darlene says:

Beautiful photos of your parents! You look so much like your dad to me.

I’m not a fan of cake smashing either. Way too messy for me. But we eloped so we didn’t even have cake! We’ve been together 15 yrs this summer.

  35. Gen says:

When I got married I wore my mom’s dress too! We altered the neckline & sleeves & had to shorten the dress just a tad, but it was perfect and so special! When I think of the money saved and the memory made I don’t think I could have chosen a more perfect dress.

  36. Hallie Palsgrove says:

How fun to see these. I never realized how much you girls favor your mother.

  37. maggie says:

I got married last September, and it was just perfect. When I asked my husband what was going through his head when he saw me for the first time that day, he said, “I thought, ‘she WOULD look that beautiful.’ ” That made me feel like the most loved girl in the world :)

  38. Randi Krog Belseth says:

wow, think it’s the first time ever that I can say that someone look like both their parents! You are true combo of both you mother and father, Lisa. :)

  39. Catherine Thomas-Smith says:

Right after our wedding ceremony, our guests went in to get cocktail hour started and my husband and I headed to a little bench in the garden to savor a few private newlywed moments between just the two of us. We sat in the sunshine and had a glass of champagne and looked out over the ocean. Laughed and cried and shared the first few moments of married life with each other. It was the perfect way to start our life together.

  40. peachgirl says:

We were taking our wedding photos in front of a lake when a swan swam over and decided to join us. The photographer got a beautiful picture of us with her and it is one of my favorites.

  41. Kelli says:

We got married 7 years ago this Monday in a glass chapel so we planned to see each other before the ceremony started. It was wonderful to spend those few moments together before the wedding started by praying with one another and our photographer captured it too.

  42. Jen says:

We had an outdoor, autumn wedding and two things really stand out:
My dad and I rode up in a horse and carriage, and while we were waiting for our cue, the sound of the violinists would blow through the trees every now and then as my dad paced around the carriage, unable to get in until the very last second because we both knew he would lose it if he did.
But the best was as we were walking across the lawn I was crying and so nervous but I could not see my husband until we got to the head of aisle and there he was, trying his best to keep it together, but tears just streaming down his face. That image will be forever in my heart.

  43. Nice post. I was checking constantly this blog and I am impressed! Very helpful info particularly the last part :) I care for such information a lot. I was looking for this certain info for a long time. Thank you and best of luck.
