“the sunflower is mine, in a way.”
— vincent van gogh

it’s true, sunflowers always remind me of vincent van gogh. i am always amazed at how hardy sunflowers are, and how much water they drink. but mostly i love their bright color and how happy they are!

have you ever grown sunflowers or do you purchase bouquets for your home?

  1. Hi Lisa, Yes I’m currently growing them this year, I even posted on how to grow sunflowers on my blog. They are happy flowers and I love them.

  2. We were given a packet of sunflower seeds at a funeral once, which at the time I thought was a bit strange. However, when they bloomed I smiled everytime I saw them which I suppose was the desired effect. Such a simple but beautiful way to remember someone.

  3. beautiful pictures. I have never grown sunflowers…but I don’t grow much of anything…the only ones I’ve ever had were from the flower dept at the store…they always look pretty good. They are just such bright happy flowers aren’t they.

  4. LOVE sunflowers! They are “our” flower! My boys and I plant them every year and then make a big deal about tossing them over the fence for the birds to eat the seed heads!

  5. LOVE them, and buy bouquets at the store every few weeks. They were my oldest son TJ’s favorite (as were the seeds)! We lost him 7 years ago. Bringing them home is a happy reminder of him. My two daughters and I have sunflower tattoos on our left (he was a lefty) ankle in his memory and my younger son has one on his upper arm.

  6. Love the backlighting! These are stunning!

Grew them once, and possums managed to chew thru the stems before they ever bloomed! Need to try growing them again next year!

  7. Do you mean hardy? I always mis-use that term, too. I think I’ll grow some this year. They’re so pretty!

    1. i want you to know megan, there was great debate at dinner last night as to whether it is ‘hardy’ or ‘hearty’ and you are right! thanks for catching the typo and inspiring some great debate. xo

  8. I have a nickname – Sunny as I plant ornamental sunflowers every year. I usually plant between 20 and 30 different varieties and am always looking for new varieties. I have so many favorites but to name a few, Lemon Queen, Chianti, and Strawberry Blond.

A friend of mine picked them and used them in her wedding but mostly they are just bring me pleasure and happiness. I was born in Kansas and now live in Missouri so it just seemed right to bring a little bit of Kansas to my part of Missouri.

  9. Sunflowers are my absolute favorite…I love getting them at Trader Joe’s…so big and so beautiful!!

  10. I L.O.V.E. sunflowers, looooove them. We planted lots in our garden last spring, and I guess the deer love them too, because every time the stems got more then a foot high, the next morning they would be stubs!Oh well, always glad to contribute to the healthy square meal of a wild animal:) Glad to know others share my love!

  11. I love sunflowers too! I grow them in my garden every summer. They are so lively and vibrant. I very much enjoy your blog Lisa. I look forward to it every day! 😉

  12. We like to grow the tall sunflowers every year. We plant them in a square, leaving the middle empty and when they get tall they lean in on each other making a bright yellow and green tent for the kids to play in. We save the seeds for the birds when the winter snows get really deep. I love to put smaller varieties on the kitchen table. They are so cheerful! They are our favorite flower.
