researching and loving Morro Bay {kayaking as a family}

One of the things I wanted to try this summer was kayaking. A couple of years ago, some friends of ours took Matthias and David–and they had so much fun! So we figured we should be able to make it work.

I researched Morro Bay kayaking and Kayak Horizons had excellent reviews. We loved them and we will definitely use them next time we go {which I hope is soon!}

Matthias was a little nervous but he did great!

I love all the colors against the blue sky and Morro rock in the background.

They gave us each a life vest. I love that silly face Matthias is making–what a ham.

Can you see that smile on David’s face?

David and Steve used a single kayak, Matthias and I used a double. We wanted to keep David close by–and the single worked great. After a bit we ended up switching and I took the single with David and Matthias and Steve took the double.

Matthias did a fabulous job paddling. He told me I was being too bossy, though!

We pulled the kayaks up the sand bank and played for a bit. Matthias named this bit of land ‘Barnacle Island’.

They’re checking on David to see if he likes kayaking. Love my boys!

All four of us. I loved sharing this adventure together.

David loved playing in the sand and he got it everywhere.

There were lots of sea lions hanging out on this dock.

We paddling around lots of boats and up and down the bay. It was a beautiful day. Afterwards, we got lunch at Blue Sky Bistro overlooking the water. It was such a fun day!

Have you tried kayaking? I’d love to hear about your experience.

  1. Great post. Loved it. We’re planning to add a “share your stuff” section for RV renters who come to the central coast to camp. Share your kayak would be a big hit with renters driving to Avila in their Prius, renting a delivered RV and having some kayaks delivered too. Wow. Cool!!!

  2. Awww…it looks like you had a great time. Good for you for trying new things. I went kayaking once in Seattle and loved it. It’s easy for beginners.

  3. So glad you got out on the water! It’s been my favorite exercise since I was 21, though some moments get dicey here in the Puget Sound with whales, seals, and sudden storms! But I love it. Love how happy you all are!

  4. We own several kayaks and a couple of canoes, so yes, we love kayaking. One of my favourite things to do on vacation is to go on a kayak tour to explore the local habitats. Kayaking through the mangroves in the Florida Keys was amazing and it was fascinating to explore the west coast of Vancouver Island. So different from what we have in our own backyard.

  5. It’s funny you mention that Matthias thought you were being too bossy. My husband and I went kayaking in the Everglades a few years ago and the instructor told us that the “brain” goes in the back and the “muscle” goes in the front. We were going to paddle me in front, but definitely not after we heard that haha.
    Your pics make me want to get out on a kayak again. Love it!
