daddy’s new coat.

i scored this vintage coat at a thrift store for steve.  $8 and in perfect condition.  it is thick courduroy with orange flannel plaid lining and leather trim.  awesome.  and matthias thought so too.  he was zipping around the house and yard being some kind of superhero.  and i couldn’t resist catching a picture of him in daddy’s coat.  he usually looks so big to me, but in this pic, he looks so tiny.

when steve got home we showed him the new coat–and it fit perfectly. now we just need to get it dry cleaned before the cooler weather starts!  c’mon cooler weather!

  1. I love thrifting-found some great skirts and a cute fair isle sweater recently. A friend asked me recently if you and I are related-the last name thing- I was quite flattered since I love your jewelry and your thoughtful insights on life and mothering. Wish I could say we were 🙂

  2. i’m going tomorrow! my friend went today and found some great jeans and a jean jacket with the nordy rack tag still on it! i love that. i have found some designer jeans and some great dkny jean shorts and banana republic lined white bermudas..love it when it happens but sometimes hate the process when i’m in a hurry (as i usually am, ahem). anyhow, great find and love your blog!

  3. What an amazing find! And your little model is absolutely adorable! I’m waiting for cooler weather here too – can’t wait!

  4. I *LOVE* thrifting. This beautiful jacket is a perfect example of why thrifting is so great. 🙂

It also reminds me of fall so much. Today I blogged about what the start of fall means to us and how we “ring it in” so to speak. 🙂

  5. OMG I LOVE how you took pictures of Matty, then Steve wearing the coat and playing with Matty. Really captured the feeling of Matty being big and little. So sweet! Great to see you the other day.

  6. my husband michael has a coat that is similar. it belonged to his grandfather. it’s a bit big on him too, because it is a big coat to fill (like big shoes to fill). the coat was worn for many years by his grandfather who had integrity, persevered, loved his wife deeply, invested in his family, and served his God. i know michael is honored to be the grandson filling the coat once worn by a man he cherished. and if anyone can fill it, MICHAEL CAN!

we do not have good thrift stores in the area. here i only find previously worn mountain wear. i bet you have great thrifting opportunities in s.l.o.

  7. Scored bigtime, for sure, with this coat! My mother trained me well in the art of thrifting & our daughters are carrying on the family tradition. I’ve found that things come my way when I’ve been generous & not hung onto something for a silly reason. In the 80’s our then 4 year old received a beautiful smocked Polly Flinders dress for her B-Day. I hung onto that dress for little sister, knowing full well that it would never fit her, due to differing body types & being born in different seasons. Nonetheless, I couldn’t give it up. (Or wouldn’t?) Finally I gave it to the Salvation Army. Lo & behold, in a short time I found that exact Polly Flinders dress in little sister’s size there at the thrift shop! A lifelong lesson for me.
I love your sweet blog, Lisa.

  8. You scored, LIsa!!! That is absolutely wonderful. The coat is really nice and both your guys look handsome in it. I love finds like this. Haven’t been out in awhile. Once I get a job, then I might start up again. love and hugs to your fam

  9. What a great find!
I’m dying to start going to thrift stores, but I feel like you really need to focus when you’re doing it… and taking the two kiddos is kind of tough. Maybe that’ll be my new alone time thing to do! You all are inspiring me to give it a go!

  10. yep! so funny you ask. last week I hit a thrift store and found a Marc Jacobs jean jacket, $6, darling teal cord jacket $6, a pair of tan 7 (seven! the brand) cords $5, a tweed knee skirt $5. i scored last week. Ill have to introduce myself to you some day. a couple of friends have said I should meet you at grace. have a special warm fall day! Brittany

  11. Day to day our “babies” seem so grown up. Don’t you love those little reminders that our big kids really aren’t so big yet. Those moments melt my heart. Cute picture!

  12. Single mom with four children and no child support? Yeah, I do a LOT of thrifting! =)

I found a 100% wool chocolate brown pea coat with tags still on (which said $190!!!) for $4. It was missing a couple of buttons. I replaced all the buttons and for less than $12 had a coat I could only dream of owning. It’s *gorgeous*!
