david update

So many of you care about our sweet David–and I can’t begin to tell you how much it means to me!

I told you we visited David’s pulmonologist at UCLA on Monday and the appointment went well. Later we got the results of David’s sinus x-rays and found out that he has some pretty serious sinus swelling and infection and also a large cyst above his left eye. He’s been congested for the last 8 weeks, so while we are relieved to be getting answers, we were so bummed to hear that there is a more serious problem.

In the next few weeks we’ll be doing an intense four week course of antibotics and we are using a new nasal spray to help with congestion. In a month or so, we’ll reassess with the doctors and decide if surgery is needed.

I was super sad for a day and cried a lot, but now I’m pulling it together and moving forward. David is a trooper. Even with his congestion and headaches he is happy and playful and living life to the fullest. There is so much to be thankful for and I don’t want to waste time feeling sad or angry. So I’m taking a cue from David and I’m living in the moment. I’m letting it be imperfect but beautiful at the same time.

This weekend we are celebrating Steve’s birthday {happy birthday sweetheart!} and relaxing a bit. What are your weekend plans?

  1. I just went through and read all your posted tagged ‘David’& I was so blessed to read those words. Your transparency, heart for your son, & determination to press on toward hope, trust, joy & faith were both inspiring & encouraging to me. It makes me appreciate what I have with my son even more. What a precious joy it is to receive love from a child. What GRACE it is to us. We are privileged.

    1. Jacqueline you are so great. Thank you for reading all those posts about David, he is wonderful. Happy New Year!

  2. Lisa,
Am a distant relative of Sue Donaldson and just took a chance and came from her website to yours and found your delightful David gracing your blog. We live in TN; lived in CA for 20 years and had to come to our mountains that are just lovely in the fall of the year.
You are handling the doctor’s visit with grace and a flourish. May God be with you and your family. It is bad when kids are born hurting but we have to take it as a blessing and live for God.

  3. Prayers to you and your family for sweet David! I do hope he gets better soon. If you are able, try to remember to give him probiotics while his is on the antibiotics ..and for a while after.. to try to replenish the good flora that is also getting wiped out. It will help to keep him from feeling nauseous, also. praying for strength for you as well. 🙂

  4. Lisa,
Praying for David, the family and the doctors. My middle daughter has a chronic sinus infection that has plagued her for years. The symptoms were consistent- every 8 weeks a nasty infection for about three years. We met a wonderful doctor that told us some very similar things, her sinuses were horribly infected. In fact the doctor feels the three years have been marked by ONE sinus infection that was never fully treated and just invaded every sinus cavity. While he felt surgery was deinately on the horizon, we tried a three week course of STRONG antibiotics combined with steroids hoping and praying the infection away. It worked! She still gets sinus infections, but we have a standard attack now. God is able- he did it in our family, He has done so much in yours. I can’t wait to see Hishand at work again in your David!

  5. Hello, I have a daughter 29 years old with Cornelia DeLange Syndrome. My sister was looking on the web and came across your son’s photo’s. They could pass for close relatives.

I too have battled the ENT,Cardiologist,GI is the most sever for my daughter Erica.

I pray for you and your family. Keeping busy and in high spirits is the best way to tackle any down fall.

It looks like you have a great support system. That will help.

Hang in there and best wishes. You are a great Mom. Dad too!

    1. Thank you Ronni! It’s wonderful to connect with other families with CdLS. We need to support each other. Sending hugs to you and Erica!! xoxo

  6. Thinking about you and your family and hoping you enjoy the weekend. I love that you let yourself be present and grieve and move forward to embrace what is with such grace. xo

  7. So sad that David is feeling crummy, prayers from MN that he will feel better soon! Happy Birthday Steve, you sound like a great husband and dad! Our weekend plans are icky. My mother-in-law passed away yesterday, so we will be making arrangements for the funeral. On the good side of that though, my sister-in-law and kids are flying in from Germany tonight. They are staying at my house, which is small and not kid-proof (since my kids are grown) and they will be here for a month! It will be interesting to have 4 adults, 2 kids, a dog, cat and rabbit in a house with one bathroom, but I am so excited to see them! My daughter spent the summer with them as a nanny, and I am jealous that she gets to spend so much time with them. Now it’s my turn. Gotta go get my “kssin’ lips” ready for those babies! Blessings to your family.

  8. Wishing a peaceful and fun birthday weekend for your whole family. I too admire your strength and spirit, and hope the antibiotics work hard for sweet David!

  9. Hi Lisa,
I rarely comment, but I am a daily reader. I can’t even begin to say how I admire your attitude in dealing with David’s troubles. I can certainly learn to spend less time being sad and angry and instead embrace the challenges that life throws our way. I have had a recent diagnosis myself that has been life-altering and your reminder today to mourn when you need to, but then move forward, is so powerful! I wish the very best for you and your sweet family.

  10. I am always amazed how strong children are, I feel that I learn a lot and have grown emotionally since having children. We will definitely keep David and your family in our prayers.

  19. I work with a dear friend junking and painting/repurposing old furniture. We like to say that our “junk” is imperfectly perfect. And really, aren’t we all?

    Blessings to all you all!

  20. Praying for all of you. I just love that sweet boy so much… Is that strange from a stranger? 😉 I have two boys too and this “mama heart” of mine hurts for you with the news of the cyst. Praying a special prayer of peace and strength for you right now…. because we’re all imperfect, and this is beautiful.

  21. I’m so sorry about the sinus issues. They can be awful. Our children have had issues over and over again and both had surgery for them on the same day. I hope that with these antibiotics and nasal spray that he won’t have to go through that. Hope you have a great weekend celebrating Steve’s Birthday, xoxo

  22. Aww, precious little David! Keeping him in my prayers along with you and the rest of your family. It’s so hard to see our kids hurt. Thanks for sharing little bits of him with us, Lisa. I love following along with your journey.

  23. Happy Birthday Steve! So sorry to hear about little David. My son has CF and sinus issues go with it. He had sinus surgery and it really made a big difference for him. He does saline rinses every day which are great but not sure if you could do that for David. Will keep you in good thought and prayers.

  24. Praying for you and David! Oh how I loved these pictures of him!!!

I am waiting for my husband to get himself home from California! Soccer games, church potluck, and cooking are on my agenda for the weekend.
